Frequently asked questions

Hello! We know recruitment can seem a bit intimidating at first, so we created a page with answers to some frequently asked questions. Hope this helps!

Q: What is Formal Recruitment

A: Formal Recruitment is the process that allows potential new members (those who wish to join a sorority) to meet sisters in each of the Panhellenic chapters at Davis! This takes place over two weekends, and each day potential new members visit chapter houses and have conversations with sisters. As the days go on, the number of houses that potential new members visit goes down. Following the final round of recruitment, they are extended a bid that they can accept on Bid Day (AKA best day)!

Q: How do I know if I found the right chapter for me?

A: Formal Recruitment at UC Davis is based on a “mutual selection” process in which the preferences of both potential new members and the Panhellenic chapters are taken into account when matching you to your new home! As the process goes on, you’ll attend fewer houses each day as you begin to narrow down chapters based on which values are most similar to your own and the connections you make.

Q: What should I look for in a chapter?

A: This is a very common question almost all those who go through recruitment have. A great way to answer this question is by asking yourself “Why do I want to go through recruitment? What do I hope to gain from joining a Panhellenic organization?” Thinking more about what you want from a sorority can help you figure out what values you hope to see in a chapter. For our Alpha Chi’s, many going through the recruitment process hoped to gain a strong connection with sisters who would inspire and accept them no matter what as well as gain a community united towards a philanthropy meaningful in their own life. Keeping the hopes you have for a future sorority with you during recruitment can truly help you find your home away from home. .

Q: Do I have to register for recruitment?

A: Yes, you do. There is a registration form on our website under Panhellenic registration as well as on the Davis Panhellenic website.

Q: How can I prepare for recruitment?

A: All you need to do is be your authentic self! Chapter sisters want to get to know you as best as they can, and the best way for you to find your home away from home is by being true to you!

Q: Is recruitment only for incoming freshmen?

A: Nope! Recruitment is for anyone interested in sorority life, no matter your academic year. Your year at Davis will not affect your recruitment process or chances of getting into chapters! Formal Recruitment is a great way to meet incredible people and begin to get further involved at UC Davis.

Q: What happens after Bid day?

A: After you are extended a bid and choose to accept it (yay!), there is a new member period where you will learn all about the chapter before being initiated as an active member! There is absolutely no hazing within any Panhellenic chapter. The new member period is super exciting and a great time to bond even further with your new sisters.

Q: Is Formal Recruitment the only way to join a sorority?

A: No it is not. Alpha Chi Omega, as well as some of the other Panhellenic chapters, have informal recruitment processes usually in the Winter. This is a great way to try and get involved in Greek life if you are unable to participate in Formal Fall Recruitment!
